This page of Peatah.org kills two birds with one concept: first, it shows examples from typography coursework. Second, it gives a project description so design professors may adopt a project for their own class.

Professors: Please help Peatah.org keep this page growing!
Send an email with a few top class attachments plus a description of your project. Make sure to include the student names and your own. With your input, this page will develop into a showplace of creative typographic designs from around the world!

With thanks to James Craig, this “Expressive Words” project is included in the freshman typography class. The project called for “visually defining” a word in a clever way, keeping the letters black and white and making use of the negative spaces and the positive letterforms.

This project started with self-portrait photos using Apple’s Photo Booth software, and Apple’s iSight cameras. Those photos were then brought in to Adobe Illustrator, lightened in opacity, and used as a guide as students overlayed the image with type. The students used appropriate letterforms and could scale, flip, or rotate these; but, they could not distort the letters with unproportional scaling or skewing. This is an introductory typography class taught during the freshman year.
